GeoVenture
Professional Development Opportunity
The Saskatchewan Mining Association (SMA) offers educators an opportunity to explore the diverse aspects of mining operations throughout the province and their links to the Saskatchewan education curriculum.
GeoVenture includes a ½ day introductory workshop, followed by field stops at underground and surface potash mines, uranium mines and milling operations, coal mines, the Potash Interpretative Centre and more. Free relevant curriculum teaching resources are provided to participants.
The GeoVenture Program is FULLY SPONSORED by the SMA (i.e. all travel, accommodation and meals during the trip) other than a $50 registration fee for selected candidates.
To apply, educators are asked to email a brief letter that includes teaching background (# of years of experience, grade level, subject matter) as well as personal and school contact information (school name, telephone, fax, email) to: education@saskmining.ca
The “Rock’n the Classroom” GeoVenture Program was held August 12 – 18, 2023. Click HERE for more information.

Our first day took us to Saskatchewan’s newest mine – K+S Potash Canada in Bethune. We learned about a special kind of mining called “solution mining.” This is very different – but also similar – to conventional mining. The reason you would want to do solution mining over conventional mining is you can reach far deeper ore beds.
