Place Matters: Interweaving Indigenous Storytelling into Mineral Resource Education

Grades: 4 - 12. The Place Matters Unit was created by combining Indigenous storytelling, existing mining in Saskatchewan resources, and curriculum connections into an impactful and thought-provoking unit about mineral resource development. There are four main topics within the unit. Use maps and stories to understand the importance of place to oneself. Build a habitat while learning about environmental sustainability. Explore the rock cycle and mining cycle while learning that rocks are sacred. When a chocolate chip cookie, or a candy filled cake / cupcake is placed in the habitat, students work together as a mining company to develop collaborative agreements, reclamation plans, and exploration studies to mine their resources sustainably within their habitats.

Investigating Careers in the Mining Industry (2015)

Grades: 6, 7, 9, 10, 11 and 12. Embark on a thrilling journey to explore careers in the mining industry based on your unique personality traits! In this exciting activity inspired by Holland's Personality Career Test, students dive into the fascinating world of mining by discovering their personality type among six categories: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional. Through fun matching exercises, students uncover career paths tailored to each personality category, providing an engaging way to learn more about potential career options in mining.

    Marble Hopper Challenge

Grades: 7-12. In this challenge learners will design and construct a “hopper” to hold marbles, which will have a mechanism to automatically drop marbles when something is detected at the desired distance. This challenge involves designing and constructing the hopper, as well as developing and programming the circuit.

    Marble Sorter Challenge

Grades: 7-12. In this challenge, learners will design and construct a machine to sort marbles into different bins. Learners will sort the marbles, one at a time, by pressing a button that rotates a “selector” wheel and “sorter” wheel that will direct the marble into the correct bin. This activity involves designing and constructing the sorter, as well as developing and programming the circuit.

    Cookie Mining

    Unit: Lithosphere

The students will be introduced to the economics of mining. Students will buy a “property”, purchase “mining equipment”, and pay for the “reclamation” of the property post “mining”. In return the student receives “money” for the “ore” mined...

    Mine Navigation Challenge

Grades: 7-12. The purpose of the “GeoRobotics” project is to help learners explore real applications of robotics and innovation in the mining industry with respect to making the workplace safer, protecting the environment, and career opportunities. In this challenge learners use a robotic car to navigate a mine pathway to deliver materials. Concepts include time delays, obstacle avoidance, line following, and designing a haul truck.

    1. Potash Detectives

Grades: 4, 5, 7 & 9-12. Learners will become detectives as they uncover the mystery of potash by rotating through stations and filling in their doodle notes worksheet. Each station is developed as a clue with a yellow evidence card, asking important potash questions (what, where, when, why, and how). This lesson is an update from the original Potash Kit lessons combining..."Potash, What is it?" "Is there Potash Under My Feet?" and "Healing Waters of Manitou Activity."
