Place Matters: Interweaving Indigenous Storytelling into Mineral Resource Education
Grades: 4 - 12. The Place Matters Unit was created by combining Indigenous storytelling, existing mining in Saskatchewan resources, and curriculum connections into an impactful and thought-provoking unit about mineral resource development. There are four main topics within the unit. Use maps and stories to understand the importance of place to oneself. Build a habitat while learning about environmental sustainability. Explore the rock cycle and mining cycle while learning that rocks are sacred. When a chocolate chip cookie, or a candy filled cake / cupcake is placed in the habitat, students work together as a mining company to develop collaborative agreements, reclamation plans, and exploration studies to mine their resources sustainably within their habitats.
